WRITING TO DUMMIES

By definition, lawyers are writers.  We write briefs, memos, contracts, discovery requests, motions, etc.  In all of these tasks, we use legal writing to convey our message.  Yet, legal writing is not appropriate in all contexts; particularly when communicating with laypeople.

When writing letters to clients or articles for publication in the mainstream press, it's important for lawyers to remember that simpler is better.  It's also important to remember that, unlike a judge or opposing counsel, a layperson is not required to read your communication.  As a result, a client letter or newspaper article must be entertaining as well as informative.

As the author of hundreds of published articles, Mr. Carter can show your attorneys how to:

Create compelling opening paragraphs
